Family narratives are the spoken and unspoken “rules,” beliefs, and stories we absorb growing up. They can come through in many different ways. Some are explicitly stated and others are established in more implicit ways. These narratives shape how we see ourselves, others, and the world. These stories can guide us in helpful ways, giving us identity, belonging, and values. But they can also become limiting or painful, keeping us stuck in old patterns. By noticing our family narratives, we gain the power to choose: Do I want to keep this story, rewrite it, or let it go?
